About the Author
Carol Logan Newbill has been making up stories since she was three years old, sewing since she was seven, and making quilts since 1975.
During the 1990s she wrote and edited quilt books for Oxmoor House, including The Olympic Games Quilts: America’s Welcome to the World and several volumes of the Great American Quilts series. As a quiltmaker, she has won numerous awards for her original quilts. As a visiting instructor, she spent several summers teaching fiber arts at the Taos Institute of Arts in New Mexico.
Carol grew up with the sound of trains through her world from the nearby rail yards. These days, she lives some distance from those rail yards, but the freight trains still whistle every night at the grade crossing near her house. She traced Emma’s journey on the California Zephyr in March of 2011.

Huh? What’s a quilt mystery and how is this one different?
A quilt mystery is a quilt design that is presented in sections so that the quilter does not know what the final design will be until the last section has been received. Mystery segments are usually delivered weekly: Week one you will receive yardage information; week two you will be told how many pieces to cut, and so on. By the fourth or fifth week the entire design is revealed.
